Beavers Visit the Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Saturday the 26th of May saw the Ardsley Beaver Scouts take a trip to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.  We had a scorching hot day for our visit but every inch of the park was explored and enjoyed by the 21 Beavers, 4 Leaders, 3 Young Leaders and several parents and grandparents.

We spent the morning viewing and petting animals from goats to meercats then took a stroll through the lemur enclosure.  We found a shady spot for our lunch followed by a session in the adventure play zone balancing, swinging, climbing and generally having a good time.

Here the girls show the boys how a rope swing should be done . . . . .

Or was it the boys show the girls ? . . . . . . .

A little bit of team work get the boys across the low ropes, then we headed off to enjoy ice creams before setting out to view the Leopards, Tigers and Lions.

We took a moment for a rest and a cool off, time to reflect on our day.
Everyone had a great time, thanks to the Beaver leaders team and our YL's doing a great job as always, and parents for helping us out and thank you Ed for stepping in as a Beaver Leader and photographer for the day.

Explorer D of E trip

This weekend saw 6 of our Explorers put weeks of planning into use as they set out on their Practice expedition for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award.

After fixing tents to rucksacks and sharing out the food It was time to start there 14 km hike from the Scout hut to Silverwood .
Arriving a few hours off schedule (they say they had a long lunch)
Meths Burning cooker thingy
they  pitched their tents and had a few hours to recover before it was master chef time cooking  their teas on trangia stoves (meths burning cooker thingies)

Sunday morning and it was time for breakfast before striking camp and setting out on a gentle 8Km  towards Cannon Hall Country Park.
All packed and ready to go.
Well done to all 6 who took part and despite looking tired I'm sure they are all looking forward to planning and walking the Qualifying expedition in the near future.

Scout Expedition Camp May 2012

From Friday 11th May, 9 Scouts set off from the Scout HQ on a 8 mile hike to Silverwood Camp Site.  After pitching up , the Scouts collected wood for the fire and enjoyed hot chocolate and buns before retiring to bed.

On Saturday morning the Scouts rose to cook breakfast on an open fire, collect wood, fetch water and build survival shelters ready for their beds later on Saturday night.  After setting off on a hike towards Wentworth Castle where they undertook a Leaders Challenge, where they searched the parklands for points of interest and took photos of each.

After returning to the camp, the Scouts prepared the fires for a serving of baked potatoes and delicious fillings.  After a quick rebuilding of the shelters, the Scouts settled down to gain their experience of sleeping in a survival shelter.  Hot chocolate and biscuits set the Scouts up for a good nights rest.

Rising on Sunday morning the Scouts started to show signs of tiredness as they played out a wide game, but they carried on to the conclusion at lunchtime.

All in all, this was a great achievement for all the Scouts who have met their requirements for their Expedition Challenge Badge, and some also gained enough experience for some activity badges too, including their Survival Skills Badge.

Thanks for all the help to the other leaders.

All the photos from the weekend can be found here.

If you did not attend St. George's Day at Wentworth on Sunday, you would not believe how wet it was...Here's the evidence, thanks to Sharon for the photo's, my camera was staying firmly in it's case in all that rain :-)

Scouts with brolly in one hand, make their promise

The value of a good waterproof with a hood!

Flags were still paraded, despite the rain
Let's hope we get Sunshine for our next event!
